In the fifth grade, Esclavon Prewitt knew exactly what he wanted to be when he grew up. He’s still got a certificate from back then that says so: a sports journalist.
Prewitt recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mass communication with a minor in public relations and social media management and is the director of social media management and marketing at Perry’s Digital Solutions in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Though he was recognized as the 2022 Senior Elite for the mass communication program for his studious academic prowess, Prewitt stayed plenty busy outside of the classroom as well during his time on the bricks.
Prewitt said receiving scholarships like the Freshman Leadership Scholarship and the Junior Alumni Board Leadership Scholar as well as scholarships from the track and field team and Department of Communication, motivated him to stay busy.
“Getting those scholarships gives me confidence. I feel like I’m being recognized for the things I’m doing. It’s like people actually see me, and I should keep doing what I’m doing,” said Prewitt. “I’m very grateful.”
Growing up, Prewitt played a variety of sports. He also loved to watch sports broadcast personalities like Stephen A. Smith, Stuart Scott, Shannon Sharpe and others share their post-game thoughts and predictions, which inspired him to fuse his passion for athletics with his love of storytelling.
Prewitt was an anchor for “Vallo Vision News” and Falcon Athletics Network, managed social media for two companies and the corporate account for his fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha. He pulled double duty as both the president of his fraternity’s UM chapter and the National Pan-Hellenic Council on campus. As if that wasn’t enough, Prewitt also found time to compete with the track and field team.
During the fall 2022 semester, Prewitt interned at Birmingham news station ABC 33/40, where he gained experience covering everything from crime to car accidents to Christmas parades.
“The number one thing I love about reporting is, you hear a different story every day. You don’t know what you’re going to see when you get to the job. You meet so many different people and go to so many different places and hear so many different stories,” he said.
